Special Maritime event

Amateur Radio Special Event @ Maritime Museum San Diego

The oldest active sailing ship in the world, the Barque Star of India, using
call sign NS6IO Mobile, will sail in the San Diego area to celebrate her
148th birthday on Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of November. She
will be accompanied by the HMS Surprise, also operating using the call sign
NS6OI Mobile. HMS Surprise is a sailing replica of the 20 gun British Navy
Frigate HMS Rose circa 1757.

Star of India, initially named EUTERPE, was completed in the Ramsey
Shipyard, Isle of Man, in November of 1863. She sailed around the world
several times carrying cargo and passengers. She was renamed Star of India
in 1902 when she joined the Alaska Trading Association carrying cannery
workers and cargo from Oakland, CA to canneries in the Bering Sea and
returning to Oakland with canned salmon. The Star of India was brought to
San Diego in 1926, was restored over several decades and became the flagship
of the Maritime Museum San Diego in early 1970s. HMS Surprise was used for
filming the 2003 movie “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”,
starring Russell Crowe.

Homepage of MMSD is http://www.sdmaritime.org/.

Amateur radio operations each day (12th and 13th November will be as
follows:

Star of India – - 1600Z until 2300Z
20 Meters SSB 14275KHz(+/-), alternating
every 2 hours with CW on 14035KHz (+/-)
10 Meters SSB 28350KHz (+/-), alternating
every 2 hours with CW on 28025KHz (+/-)

2 Meters & 70 CM VHF & UHF FM, alternating
between major repeaters in Southern California

HMS Surprise – - 1600Z until 2300Z
20 Meters SSB 14265KHz (+/-)
10 Meters SSB 28375KHz (+/-)

2 Meters & 70 CM VHF & UHF FM, alternating
between major repeaters in Southern California

Note: There will be only one operator on duty per vessel each day, so there
will be no capability for simo operations on different modes and bands. We
ask for your patience because of the expected operator workload and possible
occasions of mal de mer on the part of our landlubber radio crew.
Propagation conditions permitting, we plan to alternate operations between
20M and 10M, and stick with whichever band is propagating the best. If the
ships venture into international waters, we will append the suffix
“/Maritime Mobile” to NS6OI and indicate which of the ships is transmitting.

NS6OI QSL cards will be sent to stations which provide their QSL card and a
SASE.
The mailing address for QSL cards is:
Star of India Amateur Radio Club/NS6OI
1492 Harbor Drive
San Diego, CA 92101

This would be a great contact.

2011 Wings Over Houston Report

October 22nd, 2011 No comments

Many thanks to Del, W5QQ for providing this report.

This year marked the 27th anniversary of the Wings Over Houston Air Show. As usual, it was fantastic! The Wings Over Houston Air Show is the fourth largest air show in the United States, and it is always a spectacular show and event.
For Katy Amateur Radio Society (KARS) members the air show is a public service opportunity. It is their opportunity to support a high visibility event by participating in a very dynamic and sometimes high tempo administrative ground support and logistics communications role using their Amateur Radio equipment. When you participate in the Wings Over Houston Air Show you will come away with the strong sense that you have been of service to the Air Show, and that the event management truly appreciate your service. Public service does not get any better.
Mark your calendar for next year’s Wings Over Houston Air Show
26, 27 and 28 October 2012
The 2011 Wings Over Houston Air Show was absolutely spectacular, and some of our members were there supporting the show as a part of the volunteer Amateur Radio communications team. Those that I know of were Scott Reeve, KT5SR, Joe Peet, N5IDF, Sachiko Peet, W5IDF and Del Partridge, W5QQ. It was the second year that Joe and Sachiko worked the show. For Scott and Del it was their fifth year participating in the Wings Over Houston Air Show.
For those of you who were unable to participate this year I have included a link so that you can read about all of the featured performances. http://wingsoverhouston.com/woh_performers.htm and http://www.wingsoverhouston.com/woh_schedule.htm. Be sure to go to these listed URLs and read about what you missed at the 2011 Wings Over Houston Air Show. If you did not see it you missed out. If you didn’t participate as a communicator you really missed out.
Even though it seems impossible to top the 2011 Wings Over Houston Air Show, you can bet that plans are already well underway to make the 2012 Wings Over Houston Air Show even better. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation. For the 2012 Wings Over Houston Air Show the unequaled aerial demonstration team, the United States Navy Blue Angels will be the featured performance. This will be your chance to see the F-22 Raptor, in addition to a line-up of military and civilian air show features that you won’t see anywhere else. Mark your calendar now. Don’t miss this opportunity.
Become part of the Amateur Radio Communications team that supports the 2012 Wings Over Houston Air Show. You’ll use your Amateur Radio skills and see a fantastic air show.

Report on the 2011 JOTA Event at the JLFSHS

October 16th, 2011 1 comment

Joe, please be advised the Boy Scout JOTA event went very well. You should be proud of our club.
Mike Brannan prepared and presented a great introduction to the radio merit badge and Ham radio for the scoutmasters. The following hams helped out Saturday : David Land, Charlie, Ron, Peter, Tom, Phil, and I.
We had about 10 scouts and 4 adult leaders. David, Ron, and Peter ran the radio room demo. Charlie brought his go box station and demonstrated it in the training room. The hands on morse code went great.
We received an invitation and request to participate in their district camporee next spring, to set up a station in the field.
Several scouts and scouters want to know dates for when we will conduct the merit badge course. They will contact Mike Brannan.

Oct. 15, 2011 VE Session Report

October 15th, 2011 No comments

I’m sorry to say we had ‘no takers’ today for our VE Session. Our 3 VEs were there but no one came to take the test.
We did have a good turn-out for the Boy Scouts which will be covered in another posting.

Surfing the www.navy-radio.com website today while listening to 15 and 10 meters I ran across this interesting article:

http://www.navy-radio.com/commsta/cutler.htm

Wow! 1 MILLION watts ERP is full power and 1.8 MILLION is MAX! And the size of those antennas! Amazing!
This site is still in operation, you can find it on google maps if you enter Cutler, ME and then look at the satellite picture of the peninsula just West of Cutler.
