October 12, 2015. Regular monthly meeting. Harris County ESD #48 fire station 4, Franz Rd. Katy, TX

Meeting called to order by President Bob WB3EWP at 7:30 PM.

All in attendance stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Thirteen members and one visitor signed in.

Everyone introduced themselves. The visitor was Paul Mercer, KG5IGK who was later voted into club membership.

Motion by Mark N5YUS and seconded by Tommy KG5FMA to accept the minutes of last month’s meeting as posted on the website. Motion passed.

The Treasurer’s report was given by Mike KA5OXA. Motion by Charlie KT5BBQ and seconded by Mark N5YUS accept the treasurer’s report. Motion carried.

There were no Board of Directors minutes to read in as much as there has not been a BOD meeting since our last monthly meeting.

Old Business

Our weekly net continues on Tuesday evenings at 8:00 PM on our repeater, 147.200 Mhz.

We had a bad 10 meter band pass filter. Mike KA5OXA has sent it back to the manufacturer for repairs along with a rebate coupon for the cost of mailing.

The repairs to the exterior wall of fire station #4 have finally been completed. A date to install our new VHF/UHF antenna will be set soon. This will need to be coordinated with the fire department (ladder truck, etc.).

Our ladder line to the HF antenna has been snapped in multiple places. This will require replacement of the completer ladder line and installation. Both activities need to be scheduled simultaneously. Weather permitting, we will come out Saturday after breakfast to assess the situation.

We discussed how Charlie KT5BBQ should be reimbursed for the coaxial cable he supplied for the VHF/UHF antenna re-installation that is forth coming. One likely scenario is that Charlie gives the club a bill and we pay him for the cable. We file the cost with our insurance. Charlie has indicated that he would probably turn around and donate back to the club an equal sum of money.

Photo documenting for a KARS member album continues. Pictures are able to be taken during break time.

New Business

The club is holding applications for three prospective members:
Ruben Caparos, KG5IOO and Nick Magoulianos, KG5IOP were not in attendance tonight. (Second reading)
Paul Mercer, KG5IGK was in attendance. Motion by Mark N6YUS and seconded by Jack WB5KVV to accept Paul in to membership of the Katy Amateur Radio Society. Motion passed.

This year’s Christmas party is scheduled for Monday, December 14th at 7:00PM. It will be held at Spring Creek Barbeque, 21000 Katy Freeway at Westgreen Boulevard. Spouses/family are welcome to attend.

The club has been given an opportunity to move the club repeater from its current location behind West I-10 station 2 which is elevated to approximately 70 feet above ground to a site on top on the Memorial Herman Katy Hospital which would be about 140 feet high. The new antenna has been installed on the hospital roof by a professional antenna installation company. By court order, ALL equipment in several firehouses cannot be removed until a final settlement is reached. Both parties, West I-10 fire department and Harris County
ESF #48 are not due back in court until late May 2016. Our repeater is still operating from station #2.

Charlie KT5BBQ gave a report on where moving the repeater and the cavity filters stands. He stressed that Darrell KK5LG is handling the situation, given his contacts with both parties and the fact that he is repeater trustee.

The money outlay to move the repeater to Memorial Herman Katy Hospital is considerable, given our budget and income levels. It was decided last month to fund the costs out of the KARS treasury, and seek donations to reimburse the club. Several members have stepped up by making donations for the effort. All are encouraged to do so.

If you use QRZ.com to look up call signs and get good general ham information, you may think about supporting their cause with a donation.

Entered into record this 12th day of October, 2015 by Brian Havran, recording secretary.
