Where in the World is The Marshall Islands (V73)

Think WW II – the big one. Names of individual atolls are engraved forever in American military history. Part of Admiral Nimitz’ island hopping strategy, islands in the Marshall and Gilberts chains became battle grounds. After the war, the islands, especially Bikini and Eniwetok atolls became U.S. atomic testing grounds. The first hydrogen bomb was tested there.  Officially named the Republic of the Marshall Islands, none of the 29 low-lying coral atolls and the five coral islands in the Marshall group rises to more than 20 feet above high tide. The islands are coral caps set on the rims of submerged volcanoes rising from the ocean floor. The island units of the Marshalls are scattered over about 180,000 square miles of the Pacific.  To read more…

KARS General Meeting – Monday, October 8, 2018

Meeting called to order at 7:30 PM.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Treasurer’s Report – Raul Ramos: Current balance = $2256.61
“DXpedition – Taongi Atoll, Marshall Islands for IOTA” presentation by John McColly (W5RQ). Presentation has been posted to our KARS website – Taongi Atoll 2003 DXpedition
The September BOD minutes were read, motion was raised, seconded, and approved by club members.
Five (5) new member applications were presented and approved by club membership: Mike Almaguer, Chuck Lewis (KT5COL), Samuel Martinez (KI5AVV), Ronald Morrison (KG5WBV), and Rod Lewis (KC5RJL).
KARS Remote Station – Jimmy provided an update on the antenna and tower.
REMINDER: To help offset some of the remaining costs that will be incurred for the KARS Remote Station, KARS will be auctioning off a new ICOM IC-7300. Tickets are $20/each with the drawing to be held at our December meeting. Please contact any of the KARS officers if you are interested in purchasing a ticket(s). We have limited the number of tickets to be sold at 250.
Rudy’s BBQ has been selected for our KARS Christmas dinner. More details to follow.
Upcoming Public Service Events:

Wings Over Houston Air Show – October 20-21, 2018.
KARS will again be helping with a Boy Scout Merit Badge Fair on Saturday November 3rd, conducting a radio merit badge course. This is a district wide fair with at least 20 merit badges being offered. Last year there were over 200 scouts participating. We need app. 6 KARS members to participate in this effort – contact Jack Philley (WB5KVV) for more information and/or to volunteer.
Saturday, November 10, 2018: ESD48 Smoke Alarm Blitz. This will take place in the Cimarron Katy neighborhood. More details forthcoming.
