Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge – UPDATE

September 11th, 2018 Comments off

We need a few more KARS members to help with the Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge class on Sat 3 Nov.

It is an all day event (8-5), held at Holy Covenant Methodist Church on Morton Road. You could be a part of starting a lifelong hobby for a young person. It is also a great opportunity to work with and get to know some of the KARS members. If you can’t help all day, we also need a KARS member to operate from home, 3 hrs in the morning and 3 hrs in the afternoon to be on the other end of a QSO, as part of the class.

If interested, please contact Jack Philley, wb5kvv jackphilley@consolidated.net,

73 and Thanks

Boy Scout Merit Badge Fair

August 14th, 2018 Comments off

KARS will again be helping with a Boy Scout Merit Badge Fair on Saturday November 3rd, conducting a radio merit badge course. This is a district wide fair with at least 20 merit badges being offered. Last year there were over 200 scouts participating.

This is a great way to introduce our hobby, possibly create a lifetime interest for a young man, and provide a service to the community.

It will be at the Katy Holy Covenant Methodist Church, 22111 Morton Rd, Katy, TX 77449, from 0800 until 1700 hrs.

We will need at least six KARS members, one of which will be at home to function as the other end of a QSO.

We will be working with small groups of scouts (3-4 in the group), and conducting a series of 45-90 minute sessions. The scouts will rotate among six stations during the day.

Newer KARS members are especially invited to participate. This will be an ideal opportunity to get to know some of the other members while doing something worthwhile.

For further information contact Jack Philley WB5KVV, jackphilley@consolidated.net

KARS Kit Build & Soldering Workshops

November 15th, 2016 Comments off

KARS will conduct a kit build event in January 14 & 21.  We will build a simple AM radio using the ELENCO 780 kit. This is a beginning level kit, with about 20 parts. It should be able to be finished in about 2 hours. There are no surface mounted components and no alignment needed. Cost will be about $15.

You will need to supply your own soldering iron, needle nose pliers, and solder.

One or two weeks before the kit build Saturday, we will also conduct a soldering class for anyone interested. Cost for this soldering workshop event will be about $5.

If you are interested in participating in either event, please contact Jack Philley WB5KVV, (281) 392-8771, jackphilley@consolidated.net before Tuesday 13 Dec.

Jack will order the kits.
